Could it be, that how we move and think is interconnected?
To kick things off, let’s find a definition to what the Mind-Body Connection is. At it’s core, it suggests that our thoughts, feelings, beliefs and attitudes can either positively or negatively affect our biological functioning. Put another way, the mind has an effect on our bodies health.
In correlation, what we do with our physical body, i.e. what we eat, how our posture is and how we exercise can also either positively or negatively affect our mental state, making mind and body an interrelationship.
Although this topic is still kind of on the rise, it makes for an interesting approach to performance. Here’s what makes it worth covering.
To give you the quick answer, it’s all about understanding. Understanding how mind and body connect and therefore give you an explanation to a current situation more easily. Also letting it serve you as a tool to use in order to enhance your current performance level. One depends on the other. Surely you’ve had a stressful week before and noticed how you energy levels drowned, even if you ate right and trained well, it probably was just your mental state was off and made all the difference.
So, here’s how you could set yourself up to have both mind and body in line to function in the best way possible.
Awareness. I.e. what we just went over, keep it in mind!
Recovery and Regeneration. This is one of the most efficient, as you let your body recover from training as well as let your mind cool down a bit and relax. Some practices work really well here by combining both, such as saunas, stretching, hydrotherapy (ice baths) or meditation.
Right Nutrition. What goes into our body can affect how we feel. In fact, keeping a healthy gut by eating right, makes you less likely to suffer from mental health issues, as around 95 percent of the hormones involved in mood and emotion regulation are produced there. Thereby giving your whole system the boost it needs!
Ultimately, the Mind-Body Connection is something everybody probably knows from day to day life. But keeping the relation in mind may and making use of it may actually serve you really well! Find what works best for you, implement that and roll with it!
